Barcelona Transfer News: Joao Cancelo target RB

In latest Barcelona transfer news it is reported that FC Barcelona are hoping to secure the services of Manchester City’s highly-rated full-back Joao Cancelo. Cancelo, who joined Bayern Munich on loan in January, seems to be out of favour with Pep Guardiola, despite being a world-class player on his day. The German giants have the option to sign Cancelo permanently for approximately £61m, but are unwilling to match that fee, leaving his future in doubt.

The Portuguese international has made 154 appearances under Guardiola since joining Man City from Juventus in 2019. Scoring nine goals and registering 22 assists overall. However, he is no longer in the manager’s plans, and his current deal at the Etihad is valid until 2027.

Barcelona news on Joao Cancelo transfer

Barcelona is keen on securing a new right-back this summer and sees Cancelo as a ‘genuine’ option. Xavi does not currently have a natural right-back at his disposal. With the likes of Ronald Araujo, Sergi Roberto and Jules Kounde all being forced to play out of position in that area this season.

If Cancelo joins Barcelona, he could prove to be a fantastic signing for the LaLiga leaders. However, given the Catalan’s ongoing financial issues, they would be unable to meet his £61m price tag. Hence why they want to bring him in on loan.

Joao Cancelo VS Pep Guardiola in UCL

Joao Cancelo has played 11 times for Bayern, scoring one goal and making four assists in the process. Ironically, he could be set to play Man City in the Champions League quarter-final. With UEFA placing no restrictions on players facing their parent clubs.

Pep Guardiola will no doubt regret his decision to let him leave if Cancelo makes the difference in that game. However, it remains to be seen if Thomas Tuchel selects Cancelo in his starting XI on Tuesday.

If no one is willing to meet Cancelo’s hefty price tag, City may indeed opt to send him out on loan to Barcelona. To get his wages off the books. However, it remains to be seen if the move will materialize, as other clubs may also be interested in the talented full-back. Follow us for in-depth Barcelona transfer news.
